An analysis was made of the record of 298 patients over 65 years of age, who admitted to the surgical Dept. of the Dae Rim Saint Mary's Hospital from Mar. 1987 to Feb. 1992.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN Whole admitted surgical during 5 years were 6,327 and admitted surgical geriatric patients during the same period were 298 patients occupying 4.7% of whole surgical patients. The percentage of geriatric patients to whole patient showed
increasing
tendency annually.
2) The sex distribution was 124 male patients(41.6%) and 14 female patients(58.4%) with ratio of 1 : 1.4.
3) Average duration of admission was 19.2 days and a week to two weeks admission was most common(29.9%).
4) Of 232 operation cases, general anesthesia was 202(87.1%), spinal anesthesia was 23(9.9%) and local anesthesia was 7 cases(3.0%). 1 to 2 hours of general anesthetic time was most common(38.1%).
5) Malignant disease was 51 cases(22%) and stomach cancer was the most frequent malignant disease. Non-malignant disease was 181 cases978%) and appendicitis was the most frequent non-malignant disease.
6) Coexistent disease were noticed in 169 patients(72.8%) and cardiovascular disease was most frequent(27.0%).
7) Operation was performed in 232 cases of total 298 cases and operation rate was 77.9%. Old aged group revealed low operation rate. Elective to emergency operation ratio was 1.41.
8) The rate of postoperative complication was 37.5% and pulmonary complication was most common. The significant factors affecting postoperative morbidity were malignancy, coexistent disease, long duration of general anesthetic time and emergency
operation.
9) Operative mortality was 2.2% and the factors affecting operative mortality were malignancy, emergency operation, coexistent disease and long duration of general anesthetic time.
